Last weekend I went on a road trip with my husband. I thought we would see friends, birds and beautiful landscapes. We did, but we also saw goats.
The word for goat in Spanish is cabra, which may or may not be related to the word capricious.
We visited friends with goats, and were reminded of the origin of the word goatee.
We saw goats and kids playing in fields.
We came across this photo in a book at El Nido, a sweet hotel in Tieton, WA.
It was capricious the way that goats entered our trip and my mind.
I like leaving town and leaving my routines. While I may be looking for something in particular I often find something completely different, such as an inspiring goat.
Here is a poem by Eve Merriam, lightly related to goats and wandering. I welcome your comments and rhymes about goats, goatees, meandering or caprice.
Catch a Little Rhyme
Once upon a time
I caught a little rhyme
I set it on the floor
but it ran right out the door
I chased it on my bicycle
but it melted to an icicle
I scooped it up in my hat
but it turned into a cat
I caught it by the tail
but it stretched into a whale
I followed it in a boat
but it changed into a goat
When I fed it tin and paper
it became a tall skyscraper
Then it grew into a kite
and flew far out of sight…

ADDENDUM (May 26):
Here are some late breaking goats:
Enjoy some Mama Lil’s peppers while watching this video of Bridget and Baylee eating lunch. They are the goats that inspired this post, owned by friends Kerry and David in eastern Washington.
What a nice collection of illustrations! I particularly like the one from Morocco…
Good.
Instead of tweeting, you are bleating.

Lovely – your comments as well as the illustrations.

Great post! Coincidentally, we saw a goat on a bus today. Yep!
I would like to hear more about this goat on the bus. Where? How? Unaccompanied or with a human?
Well, it was parked in the supermarket parking lot as we drove by on the way to school. But it was loaded with things and we couldn’t tell. Plus there was so much to read on the outside, all- hand painted. I imagine it was a house and barn on wheels.
Julie, What a delightful blogpost! Glad you and Joe got over the mountains. Hope all is well. I leave for Italy in a week! Yikes……. Bill
Yay for Poppy Seed Cakes!
Auntie Katushka rocks.
Goats have figured into my imagery for years. There is something kind of human and as you said, capricious so I loved seeing what you have found.
And there are many on the island to feed one’s imagination.
Lovely images, but when I think of goat, my mouth waters. Maybe we could get goat meat from a halal shop and feast!
Such a nice array of goat illustrations! Goats are amazing, I am always stunned at their agility.
p.s. Loved the video from SCBWI meeting- thanks for sharing! And then same week I found your lovely cards at TJ’s.
Nando had a goat named Sebastian when he was a little boy (I was going to say when he was a “kid”!) Ask him to tell you about Sebastian’s sad fate someday.
Best goat-post, ever.
C’etait si beau ces chevres au Maroc. On dirait qu’elles pensaient a la Tour de Babel.
